DAY ONE

Why is Woody Island Resort different? It is different because it offers so many exciting attractions all at one destination. Situated on Woody Island in Placentia Bay, this quiet outport community, which once boasted a population of 400, is one of hundreds of fishing villages from which people were relocated under the government resettlement program. Today it is home to mainly summer visitors. Woody Island Resort offers spectacular scenery, comfortable accommodations, excellent service, traditional Newfoundland meals, live entertainment, and a wide variety of activities.

A STEP BACK IN TIME
After reservations have been made, your trip to Woody Island departs Garden Cove at 10:00 a.m. Sit back and enjoy the 40 minute boat ride outside on the flybridge or down below in our heated cabins. You will cruise through a completely sheltered inlet as you take in the unmatched scenery of Placentia Bay. As we pass Sound Island, don't be surprised if you see pairs of bald eagles as they can often be found to make their nests there. You may also see moose or caribou on the shore or whales frolicking in the ocean as you make your way to Woody Island.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Upon arriving at Woody Island Resort, guests are accommodated in four lodges where we can hold 60 people based on double occupancy (30 bedrooms with 2 beds in each room). There are private and shared bathrooms, showers, baths, a cozy dining room/common room with a fireplace. Each lodge boasts a large patio and deck from which you can view the beautiful scenery provided by the ocean, the mountains, and the islands of Placentia Bay.

TRADITIONAL HOME COOKED MEALS
Woody Island Resort is pleased to offer its guests the finest of Newfoundland cuisine. Enjoy steaming, thick bowls of pea soup, homemade bread and fluffy toutons for lunch. Dinner consists of delicious pan fried cod, vegetables boiled or oven roasted, homemade bread, cottage pudding for dessert and a complimentary glass of wine. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and we start you off right. A hearty meal of bacon and eggs with homemade toast, juice, tea or coffee. Should our guests want a little snack in between meals, they are most welcome to go in the kitchen and help themselves or ask the staff to fix them something. There is plenty of food to go around so eat up!

Bar Services are provided.

*Some adjustments, within reason, can be made to the menu if given advanced notice.
**Also see the “Day Two” section of this link for more information on meals.

DAY ONE IN THE AFTERNOON
After lunch the afternoon is yours to enjoy! You can take a stroll to Janes Cove, another resettled community, visit the sandy beach just a few minutes from the lodge or go for a row in our rowboats. There are also speedboat and paddle boat rentals as well as guided sea kayaking tours, including instruction. Read on for more details on our attractions.
ENTERTAINMENT
This vacation package includes an evening of entertainment. Kick up your heels and clap your hands to live music. Perhaps you would like to sing along. This Newfoundland spree is a lot of fun and a lot of laughs. So let loose and unwind. Maybe you’ll discover the entertainer in you! Live music

DAY TWO
After breakfast prepare for the second part of your adventure, a trip on the bay!. A boat tour through the northern areas of Placentia Bay is a unique way to get a look at some of the other resettled communities such as Merasheen, Brule, Spencer’s Cove, Tacks Beach, and Isle Valen. Many of these islands have no permanent residents, just those who return each spring to pursue the fishery. The boat tour is also an exciting way to see some Newfoundland wildlife. Bald eagles soar over head. Whales and dolphins may surface to say hello. You may even spot a moose or caribou along the shore. Of course, what would a trip on the bay be without a beach boil up? Our skipper will stop on one of the beaches along the way to prepare lunch. Feel free to hike around the harbour or just sit by the fire and enjoy some music as you wait for the kettle to boil. For lunch, we have soup, sandwiches made from homemade bread, homemade squares or tea buns, as well as tea, coffee or a cold drink. After lunch is cleared away, it’s back on the Merasheen for the trip back to Garden Cove where you bid farewell to new friends and leave with enough memories to last a lifetime.

AGENDA
TWO DAYS (One Night)

DAY ONE

10:00 a.m.
Prepare for Departure
Safety Procedure
Depart Garden Cove for Woody Island

10:05 a.m.
The crew will invite you to have a tea or coffee with fresh homemade tea buns, and you can relax in the heated cabins or take in the fresh sea air on the flybridge as you begin your journey.
As you leave the wharf, look to the left - the grassy knoll is known as Bloody Point, where two pirates are believed to have fought to the death.

10:10 a.m.
As we cruise up this beautiful inlet, you can see that this stretch of water is nestled between the hills of Sound Island on our left and the Burin Peninsula on our right. This sheltered inlet is less than a half mile wide, and as the route to Woody Island is only a couple of hundred feet from shore all the way, you have no worries of encountering rough waters. Get your cameras ready as bald eagles often nest on Sound Island and we may see a mated pair. Straight ahead Woody Island comes into view and off in the distance is Bar Haven.

10:40 a.m.
Approaching the dock at Woody Island, you see the four lodges of Woody Island Resort overlooking Old Cove as well as the stages, wharves and cabins of fishermen who return each spring to pursue the cod, scallop and lobster fishery.

10:45 a.m.
Disembark.
You have about an hour or so before lunch to acquaint yourself with our house, the staff, and Old Cove. You can take a walk to several sandy or pebble beaches within five minutes walk from the lodge; you can chat with any of the local fishermen; or you can just stroll around the cove at your leisure.

12:00 Noon
If you are settled in your room and are familiar with the place, you may enjoy the 5-10 minute walk to the sandy beach. Follow the path to the right, you can't miss it.
Looking out over the water from the sandy beach, you see Arnold's Cove and Come-by-Chance as well as Merasheen, Brule, Long Island and Spencer's Cove in the distance.

1:00 p.m.
Lunch is served - Steaming bowls of thick delicious pea soup; fresh homemade bread just out of the oven - enjoy as much as your stomach can hold. Top it off with toutons smothered in molasses and a cup of tea or coffee.

2:00 p.m.
You may like a rest after lunch, but a walk to another resettled community of Janes Cove, at the other end of the island, is a real treat. Approximately 45 minutes to the left as you leave the main house will take you over gently rolling hills and grassland with breathtaking scenery. You can go off the main trail and visit the old graveyards, hike along the beaches or visit the ruins of the church and schoolhouse. If you've never rowed a dory, now is the time to learn. Ask the staff for a life jacket and you are ready to begin. Horseshoes is a favourite game for many, or you may want to have a game of darts in our store loft. If you like a game of cards, there is, no doubt, someone eager to join you in a hand or two. Browse through some of the material on local history. Some of the photos are a real treat.

PAY PER USE ATTRACTIONS: We have three pay per use attractions which are, of course, optional. These are generally available in peak season, but may be available on off peak days as well, subject to sufficient interest and availability of staff. Minimum numbers may apply. Guided kayaking tours are $15.00 per person, wagon rides are $6.00 per person and speedboat rides are $10.00 per person. Each attraction lasts about one hour.

4:00 p.m.
You have enjoyed your walk and now is a great time to relax on the patio after your adventurous afternoon. The afternoon sun is quite radiant at the rear of the house, while the cool breeze off the ocean at the front is very refreshing. If you would like a cup of tea or coffee, go ahead and ask the staff in the kitchen.

5:30 p.m.
Supper is in half an hour. The smell coming from the kitchen assures you it's a good one.

6:00 p.m.
Supper is usually pan-fried cod, vegetables baked and boiled, homemade bread, grandmother's favourite cottage pudding, complete with a complimentary glass of wine. Don't be shy - ask for a second helping or more, if you wish.

7:30 p.m.
You've finished a relaxing supper and it's that time of the evening when the sun starts to fade and the sounds from the ocean draw you outside to catch the remnants of an unforgettable day. As you stroll along the path and down to the wharf, you become a part of the history and nostalgia.

8:30 p.m.
It's time for some music. Perhaps a guitar or accordion will set your shoes to tapping and your voice to song. For some, it's the perfect way to end this eventful day. Sleep comes soon for some as they get ready for the next day's adventure.

DAY TWO

8:00 a.m.
Some are already up and soaking up the sweetness of the early morning air as it drifts across the ocean.

8:30 a.m.
The smell of toast and bacon stirs the morning hunger. Bacon, eggs, juice, tea or coffee and heaping plates of toasted homemade bread make up a hearty breakfast.

10:00 a.m.
Breakfast is over and it's time to get the luggage ready so you can take that last walk to the beach, stroll down to the wharf, row a dory, or just relax. The staff are scurrying around getting ready for the next guests, but if you need anything, they are happy to assist you.

10:30 - 11:30 a.m.
(The staff will advise you of the exact departure time.)
Get ready to depart for the second part of your adventure.

11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
You are on your way to visit another resettled community. As you pass Woody Island, you get a different view of the trails you hiked along the day before. In the distance, you can see Merasheen, Brule, Spencer's Cove, Tacks Beach and Isle Valen. Most of these islands have no permanent residents, just those who return each spring to pursue the fishery. Keep an eye out for whales, dolphins, bald eagles and other wildlife in the area as we head for another resettled community.

Muddy Hole also called Bollard's Town is located on Sound Island and is often visited on Day Two. This snug little cove was resettled in the 1940's, well before the official resettlement program began. While the staff prepare lunch, some may wish to hike around the harbour, or you may prefer to sit around the fire and listen to some music.

The fire is lit, the kettle is boiling, the picnic lunch laid out, so it's time to eat. Our picnic lunch is soup, sandwiches made from homemade bread, homemade squares or tea buns, as well as tea, coffee or a cold drink.

1:30 p.m.
Lunch is over, everything's packed away and it's back on "The Merasheen" for the return trip to Garden Cove. As we head back, keep an eye out for whales. As we head back to Garden Cove, you will pass numerous coves which were once home to hearty Newfoundlanders and it won't be hard to close your eyes and imagine you are back at the turn of the century.

3:00 - 3:30 p.m.
Arrival in Garden Cove. A farewell to new friends.
