was born in Merasheen, Placentia Bay, a neighbouring community of Woody Island.
After several years in the banking business and after operating his own retail
business, he fulfilled a long-time ambition to go back to his roots in Placentia
Bay and give people a real true "life around the bay" experience. Gary
was born in Merasheen and moved to Placentia under the Government Resettlement
Program in 1968. He is "skipper" of the M.V. Merasheen and he handles all the
marine aspects of the operation, including the transportation of passengers
to and from Woody Island, the tour on the bay, whale watching, etc. He can sometimes
be persuaded to play you a jig on the accordian. Why is Woody Island Resort
different? It is different because it offers so many exciting attractions all
at one destination. Situated on Woody Island in Placentia Bay, this quiet outport
community, which once boasted a population of 400, is one of hundreds of fishing
villages from which people were relocated under the government resettlement
program. Today it is home to mainly summer visitors. The RESORT offers spectacular
scenery, comfortable accommodations, excellent service, delicious homestyle
Newfoundland food, live entertainment, and a wide variety of activities. After
reservations have been made, your trip to Woody Island departs Garden Cove at
10:00 a.m. Sit back and enjoy the 40 minute boat ride outside on the flybridge
or down below in our heated cabins. You will cruise through a completely sheltered
inlet as you take in the unmatched scenery of Placentia Bay. As we pass Sound
Island, don't be surprised if you see pairs of bald eagles as they can often
be found to make their nests there. You may also see moose or caribou on the
shore or whales frolicking in the ocean as you make your way to Woody Island.
